Waste management by a Steel Manufacturing plant
Steel is one of the very important industry
in a developing country and is a driver for a lot of other industries that are
dependent directly or indirectly on it. With the wide applications, it is important
for the industry to take consistent and conscious steps to ensure minimal
wastage without compromising on the quality and quantity of products. Steel is
considered as a sustainable product as it is completely recyclable and does not
harm the environment. With proper steps, we can make the processes of Steel
making sustainable and safe for the environment as well.
Here are some of steps taken for proper
waste management by Steel making plants:
1. Recycle
and Reuse
Water is one of the
important components used in the processes at a Steel manufacturing plant. From
providing water for cooling processes, for cleaning purposes, to maintaining
temperatures, etc water is an indispensable material used in the manufacturing
process. We, at Agni Steels, reuse the water for different processes to ensure
no wastage and promoting conserving this important resource. Also, the disposal
of waste water is carried out with guidelines to avoid any water pollution that
is hazardous to life and property.
2. Minimizing
wastes
It is not only important
to manage waste properly but to also take steps to efficiently reduce the
amount of waste produced in the manufacturing plant. Using quality
raw-materials will ensure that the final products are free of any defects,
minimizing the number of waste products. Studied process management will ensure
calculated usage of materials, gases, temperatures in the processes ensuring
lowered wastage. Automation of machinery and processes can also aid in
minimizing wastes through human error.
3. Innovative use of solid wastes
Even with the above practices, there can sometimes
be some solid wastes that need to be disposed. Most of such solid waste can be
recycled but there can be some that can’t be. Industries are increasingly
researching and undertaking innovative initiatives that could use these solid
wastes. Filling low-lying areas and constructing roads have been some of the ground-breaking
movements that have minimized wastes in landfills and also helped in
infrastructure development for easier transport. Slag and by-products from the
manufacturing plants is treated and used in the cement and concrete industry. Solid
wastes from the Steel making industries are also used towards brick making.
With so many initiatives already in plan,
industries are increasingly investing time and money in research for minimizing
waste and moving towards a clean and green environment without disturbing the
boom in the infrastructure and development around the globe.
